Barcelona celebrates its 5th edition of Night of Religions, in the middle of the health crisis
The fifth edition of Barcelona’s "La nit de les Religions” [Night of Religions] takes place on 12 and 13 September. The initiative includes a programme of activities, face to face and virtual, organised by 33 of the city’s religious communities and associations, including talks, guided tours, concerts and theatre representations.
This year’s edition has been adapted to the current reality, marked by a health crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This edition will feature virtual-format activities for the first time and require prior registration for activities to ensure availability of places and the necessary social distancing.
Nit de les Religions [Night of Religions] has the main goal of creating and promoting a space for meeting up, mutual knowledge and dialogue between city residents and religious and ethical communities and associations. It will offer two open days of dialogue in which some forty communities and associations of various religious traditions or convictions will be taking part: Christians from several denominations, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Baha’is, Hindus, Sikhs as well as non-religious and other organisations. As in previous editions, this will be a day for discovering the plurality of faiths, spiritual traditions and confessions of the city’s residents, for and interacting with them.
Nit de les of Religions uses inter-religious, interfaith, and intercultural dialogue to highlights how religious plurality enriches and makes up Barcelona’s identity. Sponsored by Barcelona City Council and Obra Social “La Caixa”, the initiative is organised by the AUDIR Association, led by its youth group.
The official opening event will be on Saturday, 12 September, at 12.30 noon, at the Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes. Open to all city residents who have registered for it in advance, the event is expected to include speeches from the Commissioner for Intercultural Dialogue and Religious Pluralism at Barcelona City Council, Khalid Ghali, and the head of the Department of Interculturality and Social Cohesion at the “La Caixa” Bank Foundation, Francesc Ventura. Other speakers taking part will be Inês Castel-Branco, an Akiara Books editor, and Xavier Melloni, an anthropologist and phenomenologist of religion. There will be a performance of music from several cultures, given by Monika Czyżewska (Western concert flute) and Alejandro Mateo (baroque violin).
Francesc Torradeflot, the director of AUDIR, states: “Civil society’s religious communities and organisations have played a key role during the lockdown, often supporting the most vulnerable from material, emotional and spiritual perspectives. Nit de les Religions aims to make its contribution to this spirit of support and neighbourliness through the activities that are going to be carried out”. What is more, “it seeks to continue being a meeting and dialogue space that enables people to discover at first hand the diversity of our country and to act as a tool for helping to eliminate prejudices, stereotypes and hate speeches”, he adds.
For his part, the Commissioner for Intercultural Dialogue and Religious Pluralism at Barcelona City Council, Khalid Ghali, explains: “The Barcelona Charter of Rights and Duties states that Barcelona is a city of positive community life that is based on responsibility, plurality, tolerance and respect for human rights and the promotion of conditions for the free and full development of its citizens. Freedom of conscience and religion and their recognition in the city are fundamental. And for freedom of faith and conscience to be truly possible we need to work in the framework of secularism, so that all world views and options of conscience (whether or not religious) can coexist and cooperate with equal opportunities. But besides the right to the expression of faith, religious and ethical organisations and traditions contribute priceless wealth and value to cities such as Barcelona. They are part of a common good, a historical, cultural and human good that must be guaranteed and preserved”.
So, then, the 12 and 13 September will be two days for discovering Barcelona’s various religions, forms of worship and faiths. Days for believers and non-believers alike, for positive community life and enjoyment.

Your Work for God Is Not in Vain

I was doing too much… I could feel the tell-tale sign of my achy shoulder and knew my stress level was rising. Yet, I continued. I was the Bible club teacher, Sunday school teacher, praise and worship singer and I organized and rehearsed with the youth of the church for programs on all festive occasions.
It wasn’t that bad, I was doing the work of the Lord and keeping busy until his return. But the more stress I felt, the more I realized that no one was noticing the hard work I was putting in.
There was no thank you, no good job, not even a pat on the back and my stress grew. What I failed to realize at the time was I shouldn’t even be seeking men’s applause; only God’s.
Have you ever felt this? At some time or the other, whether it was at church, your workplace or home, you felt discouraged in your welldoing because you were taken for granted.
Sometimes, all you want is just one person to tell you good job so you can have the strength to continue… but it never happens.
This is why our key verse is so important. It is found in the book of 1 Corinthians and it was written by Paul. Paul knew exactly what we would face - the people of Corinth were facing the same problem. That’s why Paul wrote this verse to encourage them.
The good news is that even if no one mentions the good work you’re doing, God sees it. He never slumbers nor sleeps. He is ever-present. There is no good thing you’ve done in his name that he hasn’t taken note of.
Sisters, when you feel like fainting, this is when he will renew your strength like the eagles so that you will soar. He admonishes us to be steadfast, immovable and consistent.
Steadfast- this gives the image of not quitting. Be sure and steady. There is a reason God wants us to be diligent and tell us at the end our work will not be in vain.
Immovable- solid, a stronger addition to the word steadfast; in other words, don’t be easily shaken. I know you feel like the only one still being faithful, (so not true), keep being firm and faithful you’re doing it all for God.
Consistent- be always abounding in the work of the Lord. Everything your hands find to do, do it to the best of your ability because you serve an awesome God.
When Paul penned these words, he talked about the certainty of death, but its loss of power over the life of the believer.
At the time, I really wasn’t doing more than I could handle, I was just discouraged, and I allowed my thoughts to control doing my best for Christ. Now, I know for sure that when discouragement knocks on my door, I need to quote this verse and remind myself that my labor is not in vain.
All I have to do is serve him in sincerity and do my best to bring him glory. He has promised that what we do for him will not be in vain.

We began in Kenya with a group of Christian businessmen. With the Great recessions, these men saw a need for a spiritual revival in the Africa continent.
